Mayhem in Maddy’s life

R Madhavan recently released a book for a long standing friend N Sampat Kumar.

Maddy, who is still high on the success of 3 Idiots, said he had immense respect for his director Rajkumar Hirani because adapting a book into a film is very difficult.

Madhavan said he loves the popularity he enjoys both, in the South and the North. “I love the idea of being identified as ‘Maddy Paaji’ after the success of Three Idiots and Teen Patti.

Down South, I am referred to as ‘Maddy Thambi’,” he said. The Tamil heartthrob is now heading to Monte Carlo for a Tamil fim with Kamal Haasan and Trisha. And he revels in the mayhem that’s there in his life courtesy his Hindi and Tamil films that take him across the globe.

Aamir’s culinary skills

Aamir Khan, who is eating, breathing and sleeping Peepli Live these days, has promised his favourite girl in the industry Kareena Kapoor that he will hold a special screening of the internationally-feted film for her and Saif Ali Khan.

Aamir, who is taking a sabbatical from the studios, says that he would like to do another film with Bebo and of course, with Katrina Kaif with whom he teamed up for a magazine cover. “Kareena and Katrina are both doing exceedingly well in their careers.

And I’m keen to work with both of them, sooner rather than later,” says the Bollywood superstar. And then he grins and adds, “For the moment, all I can do is feed them a lovely meal that my mother is teaching me how to make. I am sure they will be very happy to eat the special meal that I will cook for them.”

Maanyata recommends Ameesha

Maanyata Dutt is, apparently, the new Godmother in town. The lady is said to put in a good word for her friends wherever she can.

Reports say that she recommended Ameesha Patel to a couple of producers who are close to the Dutts. One knew that Sanjay had a large heart.

Now, it looks like his largesse is rubbing off on his biwi too. Incidentally, Ameesha is very popular on the stage concert circuit. Sources say the actress has flown to Chandigarh for a concert.

Big B wishes speedy recovery to SRK

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has wished superstar Shah Rukh Khan a speedy recovery from his aggravated back problem.

"Speedy recovery for your back Shah Rukh! It is such a bother really. I take resort through medication, but massage is better," Bachchan wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

Shah Rukh's back pain has aggravated following the hectic shooting schedule for his film "Ra.One".

He is finding it tough to get into the superhero avatar for the film and perform dangerous stunts due to the problem.

He tweeted: "Huge blue screen... 100 cars... cranes wires... gawd i am making a film beyond my means. Now working with my doctor on my back. Time to scream out ouch... ooh... aah."

KJo wanted me to look sexy: Imran

Young actor Imran Khan, who is playing a bit of a womaniser in "I Hate Luv Storys", says filmmaker Karan Johar wanted him to look effortlessly sexy for the role. He was put through rigorous workouts even though he doesn't quite like gymming.

"Karan is very particular about the look. The character I play is a kind of womaniser so he wanted to have that sexy edge. He said at any point the clothes should fit me in a certain way and I should have the look of a guy who is effortlessly sexy," Imran told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mauritius, where he is shooting for "Break Ke Baad".

"He told me that I'll really have to work on my body to get that desired look. So, long before I started the film, I started training for that. I changed my diet, my workout pattern, everything."

Releasing July 2, "I Hate Luv Storys" is Punit Malhotra's directorial debut that will see Imran romancing Sonam Kapoor on screen.

Unlike his colleagues, the 27-year-old is not so keen on going to the gym.

"I hate the gym. I find the gym damn boring so I opted for functional training. When I was half-way into the film, I did intensive workouts. I was working out twice a day... I was doing pilates (high end yoga) in the morning and functional training in the evening.

"And for about a month and a half, I was living on steamed fish, steamed vegetables and brown rice. I avoided everything - no oil, no spices, nothing of the good stuff," added the self-confessed foodie.

Imran struck gold with his debut movie "Jaane Tu ... Ya Jaane Na" in 2008. However, he couldn't repeat the same success story with "Kidnap" and "Luck".

Considering its youth appeal, "I Hate Luv Storys" looks similar to "Jaane Tu ... " But Imran doesn't agree. "The tone and treatment of this one is very different from 'Jaane Tu ... ' This is a little glamorous and toned up movie."

Speaking fondly of his co-star, he said: "Sonam and I hit it off really well right from the beginning. We were doing rehearsals together and we really started to know each other. Our style of working was quite similar. Professionally, she complimented me and I complimented her very well."

The story revolves around Jay and Simran, who are complete opposites when it comes to romance. While Jay doesn't believe in love, Simran swears by it and is quite filmy when it comes to love. In the film, both of them work for a well-known director who specialises in grand romantic potboilers.

Imran says it was a conscious decision to do ths light-hearted film. "When I came out of shooting 'Luck', I was really sick of action, thrill and darkness and I wanted to do something that was really light and fun. I was actually looking for a script like that and this one was apt as the entire tone was very irreverent. So on any given day and moment of time, we were doing things that were really cheeky and really fun."

The actor was also tipped as the next gay icon when pictures from the movie's photo shoot appeared for the first time."

"I am not really sure where that came from and how it came but who cares? If people like me, better... if people like the film, all the better."

"I Hate..." takes pot shots at Karan Johar's own romance films.

Imran said: "The kind of movies the director (in the movie) makes is inspired from Karan - how Karan makes grand movies on a grand scale, but the character is not actually based on any one director.

"We have taken a public image of how people perceive directors and we make fun of that. The idea is not to make a caricature or spoof or anything. That is not the intent. Our intent was always to make a fun, romantic comedy."

Imran's other future projects include his uncle Aamir Khan's home production "Delhi Belly".

Sushmita's craze for tattoo's

It is a very well known fact that Fomer Miss Universe Sushmita Sen is crazy about tattoos. And undoubtedly her tattoos speak of her personality and she has got four inkings etched on herself in the past year. The 34-year-old actress’ latest tattoo is a bold etching of the words ‘I Am’ on her right wrist, which she says is a proud declaration of her own identity. “I love tattoos. I have three on the arms but the fourth one I cannot show you. They are all permanent and I think I will add more to them,” Sushmita declared. The one on her right arm reads ‘Temptation’ and she also sports a tattoo on the left wrist which says ‘Soli deo glory’, meaning ‘Glory to God alone’ in Latin. “I love my Temptation tattoo, with the T shaped like a dagger. Celebs fly for IIFA

Amidst all the controversies, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards 2010 is going to be a star-studded event with many Bollywood celebrities flying to the Island country Sri Lanka. The film festival will kick start on June 3 at Colombo and conclude on June 5.

Many Indian celebrities like Salman Khan, Lara Dutta, Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi, Hrithik Roshan, Dino Morea, Boman Irani and others have confirmed their presence for the gala event. The film festival will also see performance from Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez, who has entered Bollywood. A charity cricket match will also be played between the Indian celebrities and Sri Lankan cricketers.

However, some big Bollywood names are going to give it a miss. The news is doing the rounds that Amitabh Bachchan, the brand ambassador of IIFA, has decided to skip the event following protests by Tamilians, who are against holding the film fest in Sri Lanka for the atrocities meted to the Tamilians in the country. It is said that besides the Bachchan family, big names like Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal will not attend the event.

'I'm nervous about marriage': Manisha

‘I’m nervous about marriage’, says the bohemian Manisha Koirala who ties the knot in Kathmandu on June 19. The bohemian Manisha Koirala is getting married. Yes, finally! At 40, and after a string of broken relationships and two near marriages — in 2001, to the Australian ambassador to Nepal, Crispin Conroy, and last year, to American inspirational author Christopher Dorris. The Koirala family, which is the Gandhis and Kennedys of Nepal, have found a suitable groom for the on-and-off Bollywood actress in local businessman Samrat Dahal. He has a leather business in Kathmandu with offices in Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Agra and Kanpur. They have fixed June 19 as the wedding date. And everybody is happy, especially Manisha. “You could say it was a semi-arranged marriage,” she smiles, still beautiful despite the age lines and crows feet that mark her years.

The couple met through friends a few months back and realised that they both wanted the same things — to settle down in life and get married. They got their parents involved and it all worked out. “So ours is a semi-love, semiarranged marriage,” explains the actress who has three films releasing this year in Do Paise Ki Dhoop — Char Ane Ki Barish, Chehere, and Ek Second — Jo Zindagi Badal De. She’s also doing a Telugu film and will return to Nepali cinema after two decades with a film called Dharma later this year. Beau Samrat, however, is a non-filmi person. “He is a nice person, simple, endearing, an intellectual and a workaholic,” says Manisha.

She thinks he may have seen her in 1942 — A Love Story, but to give Samrat an idea that Bollywood was not just fun and glamour, she invited him onto the sets. “He saw me act and realised that there is a lot of hard work involved,” says Manisha. Work apart, what was also important to the Nepali actress who has been away from family and home, was that Samrat got to know and like her friends in Mumbai. So she brought him down. “My friends loved him. Once he met them, all his apprehensions disappeared. We all bonded very well,” she says happily.

She’s a bundle of nerves as the wedding date draws near. “I am super excited but a little nervous as well,” admits Manisha despite the many relationships she has had in the past. “I have had my phases. But now it has to be family,” she states when asked about her past. At this point, the actress does not know whether they will settle in Mumbai, Kathmandu or even New York, but she is sure that she will continue working for Bollywood. “I have had a very fulfiling career and have worked with the best talents in the industry... and I want to continue my work. Samrat is not the interfering kind. He has encouraged me to continue. After the wedding, I will return to Mumbai in August. I am working on a few interesting films one of which is based on Mayawati,” she adds.

Anil in dilemma!

Destiny is cruel. And if Bollywood’s recent export to Hollywood, Anil Kapoor, could have it his way, he would have fought it with all his might. However fate works in funny ways.

The rights of Anil’s television series 24 (where he plays Omar Hassan) have been picked up by an Indian channel and it will go on air from August 9. The channel reportedly has plans to hold a grand premiere and launch the event where Anil will naturally be the centre of attraction.

Sources say the actor is thrilled. However, there is a hitch. On August 6, his home production Aisha will release. And Anil’s original plans include a gala premiere for the same. The film has his daughter Sonam in the lead with Abhay Deol and it also marks the debut of his second daughter Rhea Kapoor as producer. Now the dilemma is that Anil can have just one premiere in a gap of three days because the same set of Bollywood biggies are likely to be invited to both events. And even Anil knows, that they will pass one for the other!

“This may mean he has to give up his own premiere (which the channel is unlikely to pass) or he has to sacrifice the Aisha shindig — which is his own decision but it is important for his two daughters. It is indicated that Anil is now a worried man. As a father, he wants the red carpet for his daughters; and as a star, he wants to face the flash bulbs himself. Currently Anil is sitting with his closest advisers asking them how he can possibly hold both the events. And if he should sacrifice one for the other.

James Cameron is Aamir’s friend

Avatar director James Cameron and Aamir Khan, who met in India in March this year on at a high-power summit, have constantly been in touch.

Sources say that a fortnight from now when Aamir flies to the US for promotions of his upcoming Peepli Live, he is likely to meet James again. The director has already seen Aamir’s previous works like Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 3 Idiots, and this time around, the Bollywood superstar and one of the most successful star-producers (check his record —Lagaan, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, TZP) is likely to have a screening of Peepli Live for the Hollywood giant.

Sophie pens a song for Salman

You would never have guessed that Sophie Choudry has her uses. Ever since Salman Khan started his charity, a lot of industry fellows have come forward to show their support in ways best possible.

The recent addition in this ‘friends’ list was Sophie. There was a charity dinner that was organised by the foundation in Dubai where Sophie was to perform. While she sang quite a few songs from her latest album Sound of Sophie, she also had a special surprise for the organisers as well as the audience.

She wrote a new song overnight called Jiyo Iss Taraha that was inspired by the cause and completely dedicated to it. It is a song that talks about being good to people regardless of caste, colour and creed. Helping her put this together was composer Bappa Lahiri. “I adore Salman, Sohail, Arbaaz and the entire family. The only gift I thought I could give them was a part of my talent. So, I penned this song and presented it,” says Sophie.

I haven’t faced starry nakhras: Imran

Imran Khan says that his romantic movie is not really that romantic... but unlike his character, a thorough cynic, he’s not really a cynic either

Your character in I Hate Love Storys... er... hates love stories, and throws cheesy Hindi film love dialogues at the heroine. The cheesiest lines you’ve ever heard in Hindi love stories?
Honestly, I’m not really a connoisseur of the romantic genre, so I don’t remember them well. I have a vague sense of the romantic movies made and I can name titles, but I actually haven’t seen all of them, and those that I have seen, I haven’t watched with such rapt attention that I...

Alright then, your favourite romantic movies?
I remember liking QSQT, I loved Maine Pyaar Kiya, DDLJ...

Of the three actors in these films, which one has made for the best romantic hero?
Shah Rukh has made a career of being a romantic hero - right from the early 90s till today. That’s always been his forte.

What sort of romantic hero are you playing in IHLS?
I play a character called J. His name is Jay, but he prefers J. He’s quite a cynic, and apart from not believing in love, he doesn’t believe in filmi love movies. In his life, it comes into play because he’s an AD (assistant director), he’s working in the industry, but his tastes in movies run very differently. Unfortunately, he’s working for a director who’s one of the grand romantic directors of Bollywood – Samir Soni plays this guy. Sonam plays Simran, the art director. A die-hard romantic, Simran believes in filmi clichés and also loves this guy and his films. So we clash on two levels – one is ideology, about love and romance and etc, and the second is creatively – she loves his sensibilities and I hate them. Ultimately, both of us find a middle ground.

Are you a romantic or a cynic?
I’m somewhere in between. I’m not a particularly romantic person, but I believe in love. But I don’t believe in grand romantic gestures.

And romances are not your kind of movies either?
See I like the film, because I relate to a lot of what J says. A lot of what he says I don’t agree with, also, but a lot of his lines I do. The thing is that Punit (Malhotra, the director) himself is not a mushy guy. Not at all. The treatment that he’s given it is very indicative of the kind of guy he is. He’s making a romantic film, but while making it, he’s also making fun of it. Punit has a very wicked, deadpan sense of humour, where he likes to crack jokes to people’s faces and they don’t even realise that he’s joking, which he’s incorporated into my character, so that’s something I really like.

How did you like working with Sonam?
I had wanted to work with her right since I saw Saawariya. I’d honestly liked her in the film, and I just had a sense that we’d work well together - I can’t really base it on anything, I just had an idea that we’d be really good together. And offers had come here and there, but either she hadn’t liked them or I hadn’t, and it hadn’t really fallen into place before this. This was something that I think we both agreed on - when Punit met her, she liked it right away, and I did too. Interestingly enough, it does kind of mirror our interaction in real life, we tend to squabble and have this verbal banter going on, and that’s what happens in the film as well. She’s not quite as romantic and bitchy as the girl in the film, and I’m not quite as much of a cynic, but we still have similar conversations.

Is she a very confident actress?
Yeah yeah, she’s very chill, very comfortable in her skin and with her character, so there’s never any sense of stress or struggle when working with her.

And personally, how did you two gel?
We gel well. I didn’t know her before we signed the film, I’d only met her couple of times, so I’ve really gotten to know her in the context of the film, and since then I think I’ve gotten to know her quite well.

She’s known to be this major style icon, isn’t she?
That she is, man! She’s very big on the style and the fashion and the designerwear, and I don’t know the first thing about these things.

Did you get ribbed for it?
Not really, it was the other way round. Punit and I would rag her about it, because we dress the same way - jeans and tee and jeans and tee and that’s about it. She’s always in these deadly numbers, so we would rag her about it.

You’re also working with Deepika Padukone in Break Ke Baad, and she’s supposed to be this very reserved, sorted, diplomatic person...
I wouldn’t really agree with that image. You need to base your opinion on your interaction with people. It’s been a tremendous joy working with Deepika. What I like about her is that she’s all about the work. When she wakes up in the morning, she comes to the sets with one goal in mind - to do her job the best she possibly can. There are no side dramas and nakhras and issues. All she wants is to do her work damned well, and these are the kind of people I respect.

So you’re saying you’ve worked with people who have dramas and nakhras?
Fortunately, I haven’t worked with people like that. Call it my good fortune or my being able to choose my projects, but I’ve been fortunate this far.

From Kiss to Hiss: Mallika

Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat is enjoying the company of snakes. The actress, who plays a snake-woman in her forthcoming film 'Hisss', brought real snakes to unveil the film at the ongoing 62nd Cannes Film Festival here.

"All the Sssnakes have just entered the Majestic Hotel in Cannes! Hissstory is being made:) (sic!)," Mallika wrote on her Twitter page.

"Headed to the Vanity Fair event at hotel Du Cap... For 2morro's Hisss event, @NuclearMango is gonna live-stream me and the Sssnakes:) (sic!)," she had written in an earlier post on the micro-blogging website.

Directed by Hollywood's Jennifer Lynch, the film also stars Irrfan Khan and Divya Dutta.

Mallika is also promoting her other new film, 'Love, Barack', which will be screened at the film festival.

A romantic comedy directed by Doug McHenryset, it is set during Barack Obama's campaign for the US Presidency and the shooting of the film was completed in Los Angeles last month.

Mallika is having a gala time at Cannes as she has found a new friend in Hollywood actress Salma Hayek, with whom she had dinner.

"Hung out last nite with my new friend Salma Hayek. Adore her!!" Mallika tweeted.

Hrithik Roshan in Imtiaz Ali`s next

Every producer aims for a cast and director that will deliver a blockbuster. While there are no guarantees in this industry, producer Sajid Nadiadwala has managed to get two very bankable talents together. He has signed Imtiaz Ali and Hrithik Roshan for his next film, a combination that many producers have been trying to broker for the last couple of years.

The film is scheduled to go on the floors early next year. Our source said, “Sajid Nadiadwala is the biggest producer in Bollywood today. After Housefull, he will be making the Hindi remake of South superhit Kick starring Salman Khan. His mega venture with Hrithik and Imtiaz follows Kick.

Incidentally, Sajid had signed Imtiaz immediately after Jab We Met and they have been planning the film for four years. Now, Hrithik has given the go ahead and the film will be the most expensive Bollywood production. The budget will be over Rs 100 crore as it’s a genre that has never been attempted before. It is a drama-based film and has its emotional moments. It will start as soon as Imtiaz is done with his film Rockstar with Ranbir and in all likelihood, the film will go on the floors in January-February next year.”

Even the parties involved are very optimistic about the outcome. The source added, “Imtiaz wanted to work with Hrithik immediately after Jab We Met. However, he went on to make Love Aaj Kal and now finally he is making the film with him.”

When contacted, Hrithik Roshan confirmed the news. On the other hand, Sajid Nadiadwala said, “It is true that I am making the film with Imtiaz Ali but I can’t comment on the casting as of now.”

Will Abhishek be third time lucky with Mani Ratnam?

Abhishek Bachchan's last two solo hero films have flopped and he has not been seen on screen for a while. But, then again, he is doing director Mani Ratnam's "Raavan" and the combination has never failed so far. Not surprisingly then, all eyes are on " Raavan ".

"The combination of Mani Ratnam and Abhishek is unbeatable. People are really looking forward to seeing them once again. With such a star cast and Mani Ratnam as director, the film is bound to work," said trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Made at a budget of about Rs.45 crore, "Raavan", also starring Aishwarya Rai and Vikram, is scheduled for a June 18 release.

Ratnam has played an important role in shaping Abhishek's career -- the director's " Yuva " established him as an actor and their second venture together, " Guru ", won him critical and commercial success.

In the last two years Abhishek hasn't had any hits - both his solo hero movies " Drona " and " Delhi 6 " bombed. Industry insiders feel " Raavan " might bail out the actor in the way as " Yuva " did in 2004 when he was under the weather after a string of flops.

"Mani Ratnam and Abhishek Bachchan will create a bigger magic with 'Raavan' than 'Yuva' and 'Guru'. Mani is an expert on dark themes and Abhishek pulls off such roles very well. 'Raavan' will do spectacular work," film critic Omar Qureshi said.

Abhishek bowed into Bollywood in 2000 with J.P. Dutta's "Refugee" and it was followed by duds like "Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya" (2000), "Dhai Akshar Prem Ke" (2000), "Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai" (2002), "Shararat" (2002), "Haan...Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya" (2002) and "Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost" (2003). All these films saw Abhishek playing romantic roles.

But it was rough, uncouth and ruthless goon Lallan Singh in Ratnam's 2004 movie "Yuva" that broke the jinx for Abhishek. Despite playing a negative role, he not only wowed critics but also impressed the audience.

After that there was no looking back for Abhishek. In the same year he scorched the box office with another hit, "Dhoom". His winning streak continued in 2005, when the actor gave four hits - "Bunty Aur Babli", "Sarkar", "Dus" and "Bluffmaster" and he also did a cameo in the hit film "Salaam Namaste".

"Before 'Yuva', Abhishek didn't have an actor kind of image. After 'Yuva', people were like, 'Oh my god! This guy can act.' But Mani sir was convinced that Abhishek can really do it," said a source on condition of anonymity.

Even Abhishek admits the film was a turning point in his career.

"I got 'Yuva' at a time when I really needed it. It boosted my confidence as an actor. I've evolved with Mani," Abhishek had said in an earlier interview.

Ratnam not only gave Abhishek pathbreaking roles but also presented him in dark roles.

In 2006, Abhishek teamed up again with Ratnam for "Guru", which was loosely based on business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani's life. He landed the nomination for Filmfare best actor award for his performance in the film.

"Raavan" will once again see Abhishek as a villain and a lot of emphasis has been laid on his looks and body language. The film has lots of action scenes and stunts.

"It took 200 days to shoot the film. And it was not shot at one stretch. The film was simultaneously made in Hindi and Tamil. And then Mani sir fell ill. But Abhishek didn't do any work for two years because of 'Raavan'. Both Abhishek and Vikram kept their dates free for 'Raavan' because they knew the film is good," said the source.

Ratnam, who loves shooting on real locations, filmed "Raavan" at places like the Athirapally forests in Kerala, Ooty in Tamil Nadu, Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata, and the Malshej Ghats in Maharashtra.

From diving from a 90-ft cliff into water to standing under a waterfall for two hours and braving snakes and leeches in Kerala's forests, Abhishek did it all for "Raavan".

"This is the most challenging film I have ever done in my life. I haven't done such a physically and emotionally challenging film in my life. And it's not about going to tough locations or tough scenes.

"The film drains you and you feel so good when you go home at night because you feel that you have done something. Getting a movie like 'Raavan' is so rare. You don't get such a role today," Abhishek has said.

With much hype surrounding the film, expectations are high and people are hoping that the Abhishek-Ratnam combo will strike bull's eye at the box office.

Bollywood never lags behind when it comes to current events. Recently when Kasab was given the death sentence, a movie's fate changed drastically. Now, the climax is similar to the court's decisions in real life. Watch the video for more information on this topic!
